‘The Gift of a Promise’ 105h x 75w cm Oil on Canvas 2012
I wanted the painting to explore how the spiritual and the physical unite in the act of giving birth, an event which both grounds us and enlightens. It draws us close to the fragility of life and ultimately to its wonder and the joy of creation.
A baby is small and so vulnerable, so much in need of care and nurture, but yet is also like a threshold, holding the future in its tiny form.
This is a mother, this is Mary, she holds her child out like a gift, her hands are strong and warm, he is her flesh and blood but his promise belongs to us all.
